The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact. Also look on the inside of the right grip panel for a serial number; it should be stamped on. I have one close to yours (s/n 9759xx) that shipped 4/42. If it is a pre model number gun then it can't be stainless steel since S&W didn't make stainless in a in the 50s. Could be nickel or a hard chrome finish. If it truely has no serial number there are legal problems with ownership as every S&W 38 Special that left the factory did so with a serial number. Does the gun have adjustable or fixed sights.I have a bone or ivory handled Smith and Wesson marked .38 special ctg on the barrel.
